The Band

The Utica, NY based group April Shroud formed in late 2005, and was a combination of members of the groups "Feedback" and "Adrift." Since becoming a group, the members have struggled with the truth of growing up: That life is difficult. Two former members (guitarist/vocalist Joe Hertline and keyboardist Carolyn Cronauer) have left the band over the years to pursue other interests, and the rest are facing the daunting task of entering the real world beyond college. Despite having the limited time for touring, the band has succeeded in playing shows to crowds numbering in the thousands and recording their concept album "What We Knew We Always Had," at Gecko Recording Studio in Clinton, NY.

The band plays mostly Rock and Roll styled from the classic era, including tunes from the 1960's to current Rock and Roll bands. Boasting four-part vocal harmonies, the band pays close attention to detail, ensuring that concerts are enjoyable by all.

April Shroud is a line taken from a John Keats poem called "Ode on Melancholy." Roughly summarized by literary website Sparknotes.com, the poem means that pleasure and pain are "inextricably linked: Beauty must die, joy is fleeting, and the flower of pleasure is forever turning to poison." This theme can be found in April Shroud's album, which follows a storyline about the joys and sorrows of everyday life.

When life hurts, we have to be able to see what's good about it or we'll ending up wasting it and throwing away everything we've worked for. Also, when life is at its best, be careful because there's still some evil embedded in the good. It's a yin and yang world. Be good to yourself.

Mike Peek
Mike Peek

Mike describes himself as "curiously artistic," which explains his broad focus in music. Aside from being the primary lyricist for the band along with guitarist Mike Schmitt, Peek plays the guitar and keyboards for the band. Mike taught himself to play the guitar in 1998, but also enjoys playing the Bass, Drums, and the Piano as well. Mike was the founding member of the Central New York band "Feedback" in 1999, which he played in for six years. During this time, he wrote almost three dozen songs for Feedback as well as his solo project. Mike graduated from SUNY Geneseo in 2007 with a Bachelor's Degree in English with New York State Certification in Adolescent Education. He also holds a Masters degree from Geneseo as well, which he recieved in 2009. Though the classroom makes a great daytime passion, he'll always have music to balance it all out.

Mike Schmitt
Mike Schmitt

Mike was the founding member of the Central New York band "Adrift" in 2001. He played with the band for four years until its members formed April Shroud in 2005. Mike lists Weezer as one of his main influences, as Adrift orignally performed as a Weezer cover band. Mike has also been influenced by bands ranging from The Beatles to Fall Out Boy. "I listen to everything, but only absorb what I like," Mike states. Mike finished his college education at SUNY Oneonta in the summer of 2008 with a degree in Music Industry and a minor in Audio Production. Currently, Mike works at The Turning Stone Casino in Vernon, NY as an Entertainment Technician.

Mark Malinowski
Mark Malinowski

Mark has been playing drums since 1995, learning from Mr. Michael Cirmo, who was a former percussionist in the Utica Symphony Orchestra and a Music Instructor at Whitesboro High School. He is capable of playing a wide array of percussion instruments such as the vibraphone with 6 mallets, orchestra timpani, as well as the drum set in a pit orchestra, always performing as best as possible regardless of the situation. Mark proved this at an April Shroud concert by playing when he was only days into recovering from hospitalization. Mark has also participated multiple times in the NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) Festivals, and has played with local groups such as Circle of Red, Adrift, Feedback, and China Pig. Mark is a student at SUNY Farmingdale in Long Island, NY majoring in Aviation Administration.

Emelia Failing & Kelsey Peek

Emelia Failing is a singer/songwriter in the greater Utica area in Central New York. She recently released a short demo album titled "Acoustica."

Kelsey Peek is a singer in the greater Utica area in Central New York, and is the sister of April Shroud singer Michael Peek. Kelsey is an accomplished vocalist who can be heard performing regularly at St. Peter's Church in North Utica on Saturday nights.

Both singers lent their talents to the track "Tired of Feeling," giving the song a unique distinction from other songs on the album.

Lyman Christensen
Lyman Christensen

The album "What We Knew We Always Had" would not be possible without Lyman's contributions. The album took over two years to record, mix, produce and master at Gecko Recording Studios, and Lyman was the man who did it all. The band wishes to extend a special "thank you" for the years of dedication and hard work through their constant phone calls, e-mails and text messages, as well as their incessant demand to always have copies of every minor change made to each song along the way. This resulted in a folder on the band's hard drive that was over 1gb in size for multiple variations of 16 songs. Since Lyman is a full-time teacher at Saquoit Elementary in Central New York, his patience and effort is all the more admirable.
